Gallagher performs well at Gert Wessels Voerkrale

Durability and quality, these are the two words that Johan Labuschagne uses to describe Gallagher’s equipment. With more than 2 000 cattle in their feedlot and another 1 000 in the field, Gallagher’s equipment works overtime on their farm, and Johan says the products just endure.

About a year ago, Johan joined his father-in-law, Gert Wessels, of Gert Wessels Voerkrale just outside Bothaville, where the family has been farming for more than 50 years. Here they farm with sheep, cattle and maize, and Johan is in charge of the feedlots.

When he arrived on the farm, his father-in-law was already using Gallagher’s scales and EID tags. In the feedlot, they use the scales to weigh the sheep and calves and the Gallagher’s EID tag readers that collect data.

“In the feedlot, you want to see the growth of the cattle. You could probably work it out, but the reader saves you time because it gives you all the information right away,” explains Johan.

Gallagher has a wide range of scales designed for livestock management and helping farmers track animal weight and performance effectively.

Their models include:

  • The W-0 scale is a compact, user-friendly scale with Bluetooth connectivity for real-time weight determination via the Gallagher Animal Performance app.
  • The W-1 scale is suitable for permanent or temporary installation and offers wireless weighing capabilities.
  • The TW-1, TW-3, TWR-1 and TWR-5 are Gallagher’s advanced models with touchscreens and integrated EID readers for data collection.

These scales help optimise feed efficiency, ensure accurate medication doses and improve livestock profitability.

Healthy, fat cattle at Gert Wessels feedlots are monitored with the help of Gallagher’s equipment.

Gallagher EID Tags

Gallagher’s EID (electronic identification) tags are used to efficiently track individual livestock. This helps farmers make data-driven management decisions.

These tags work in conjunction with Gallagher’s EID readers, which read the unique tag number on each animal and collect data under that tag number when animals are weighed, treated or identified.

Gallagher has permanent EID readers as well as portable readers. These readers allow farmers to more precisely monitor the performance, health and breeding of each animal.

Johan says that his father-in-law first heard about Gallagher at NAMPO and then decided to incorporate their equipment into his daily farm tasks.

“We are very satisfied with Gallagher; we continue to buy their products,” says Johan.

They also plan to buy more EID readers and use them for their veld cattle. According to Johan, Gallagher’s products may be a bit more expensive, but he says the quality is very good. This equipment is used in the veld and feedlots and passes through many hands, but they last, Johan says.

“I will definitely recommend Gallagher’s products to my neighbour. They are user-friendly, so anyone can use them. We will look at more of Gallagher’s other equipment in the future, but for now we are just buying more of the equipment we use every day.”
